Tribute Tower receives LEED Silver certification

SNC-Lavalin is pleased to announce that the Royal Canadian Navy’s new Tribute Tower project at CFB Stadacona in Halifax received LEED Silver certification in May 2019. Tribute Tower combines a 12-storey accommodation tower with a three-level podium that incorporates dining and messing facilities for junior ranks personnel.

The Leadership in Environment and Energy Design (LEED) Silver designation is often a minimum design target for federal government buildings with a construction value of $10M or greater. This project pursued and achieved the LEED Silver certification through the Canadian Green Building Council’s LEED Canada NC 2009 Green Building Rating System. Tribute Tower has been designed and constructed in accordance with a robust sustainability requirement that reduces its environmental footprint throughout the design lifetime.

SNC-Lavalin collaborated with Protection Engineering Consultants of Texas to design the structure in accordance with the United States Unified Facility Criteria (UFC) 4-023-03 standard, Design of Buildings to Resist Progressive Collapse. Tribute Tower is the first structure built to this standard in Canada.

The $65M construction contract was awarded in 2013 to a Design Build Joint Venture partnership of SNC-Lavalin Construction and AECON Atlantic. When the latter subsidiary operation was sold, both firms sold their interest in the project to Pomerleau, who completed the construction. As the designer of record, SNC-Lavalin remained involved until project completion, with our Halifax office leading an engineering team incorporating specialty high-rise experience in mechanical and electrical engineering from our Toronto office, along with specialty structural engineering experience from Sigmund Soudack and Associates in Toronto. Architecture and LEED consulting services were provided by A49 of Halifax.
