» Scope of Project

As the civil design engineer, SDMM partnered with Toronto Architect Shore Tilbe Perkins + Will and local Architect JDA to undertake the civil site servicing and grading design for the new $42M Central Nova Scotia Regional Civic Centre in Truro Nova Scotia.

» Execution

The existing property is bounded by Highway 102, McClures Mills Drive and Abenaki Road on property owned by the province of Nova Scotia.  The property located across the Abenaki Road from the new Truro Hospital was used as a disposal area for surplus fill from the hospital site in addition to surplus Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal fill and asphalt materials.  With varied terrain and elevation contours across the property and a confined space, SDMM was responsible for preparing the site grading and earthwork design to make best use of the property to create a maximum number of parking spaces for the new facility.  In addition the project required upgrades to the local road network to accommodate traffic generated by the facility.  SDMM liaised with the architect, design team, Town of Truro, client and NSDTIR for design approvals and the site contractor (Dexter), geotechnical consultant (Stantec) and construction manager (PCL) throughout the construction phase.  As a large earthworks project, the environment was of critical concern and a main focus of the project.  The project is scheduled to be completed by December 31, 2012.

» Project Highlights

Significant effort was required to coordinate the design with the Architect, design team, Town of Truro, client, construction manager PCL and NSDTIR.  Staged earthwork, cut and fill and removal and replacement of unsuitable materials was required to control sediment on the construction site as well as an ever evolving erosion and sedimentation control plan consisting of sediment ponds, pumping and control of construction runoff prior to release off site.  This project will be LEED Silver certified.
